Small Yellow Horses

'Compared to the soft, rounded forms of his "Blue Horses," done a year earlier, this variation on the theme is more compact and reveals a more emphatic modification of the horses’ bodies towards circular forms. By this time, Marc, encouraged by the cubists, had begun to employ simplification and geometrisation in a more deliberate manner, as is evident in the arching sky above the figures of the horses.

This formal analogy underscores the artist’s vision of a unity of creature and cosmos. Instead of the symbolic blue of the horses in the first version, Marc now introduces yellow, "the feminine principle, gentle, cheerful and sensual," surrounded by spherical blue as an expression of the essential masculine spirit.
